For us to heal, we first have to intellectually understand the context of the event – the why, where, what, when, how – of everyone involved. Then we have to emotionally process the information to transform it. Initially this is a liberating process that we enjoy, well, are at least curious about and appreciate the learning and changes we can make.
But we can also become trapped in trying to process everything and find the meaning and learning in it all. We become so focussed on the meaning of every event that we turn personal development into a full time chore. It’s then no longer ‘fun’!
So for today I’m going to share a simple idea – everything is just data! It’s all information that we can utilise.
See, what happens is that when that data arrives in our amygdala the hippocampus, reticular activating system and all the other parts of the limbic system that feed into our interpretations turn this simple data into drama. It links our past experiences with it; it overlays it with our self-worth and self-esteem; and it mixes in our needs and fears to make it a thick and textured reaction.
If we reply to that interpretation with the statement – it’s just data – this amazing thing happens. Our brain says “Oh! Okay, well in that case, isn’t that interesting.”
We then get to choose our response.
What happened in your world when you said “It’s just data” “It’s simply information I can utilise”?
